Community rallies to support displaced Islanders in the run up to Christmas

22 December 2022

Islanders and businesses have come together to help the 30 households displaced from around the Haut du Mont area. Following the tragic incident, the Island community has come together to support those impacted by providing everyday essential items and ensuring access to the wellbeing services they may need while they are away from their own homes, living in different accommodation. The need has been even more pressing due to the countdown to the festive period.

Among many other organisations and individual Islanders who have provided support, including contributing to the Bailiff’s Island Appeal, the Jersey Chamber of Commerce and the Institute of Directors rallied their business members to donate and help.

The Government of Jersey and Andium Homes have coordinated support for the displaced families and individuals, including alternative housing, financial help, the redirection of post, GP care, emotional wellbeing services and travel.

Deputy Kirsten Morel, Deputy Chief Minister, said. “We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the many offers of help from the community. Everyone’s immediate and generous response will help to make life for these Islanders a little easier, especially during Christmas. The support complements the broader assistance they are already receiving from the Government of Jersey and Andium Homes.

“I wholeheartedly applaud this latest display of our Island’s community spirit and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone for their kindness.”

Businesses wishing to support can contact Customer and Local Services and Islanders can contribute to the Bailiff’s Appeal until Friday 23 December by going to gov.je/JerseyTogether
