Palliative and end-of-life care strategy for adults in Jersey launched

09 October 2023

The End-of-Life Care Partnership led by Jersey Hospice Care and Health and Community Services has launched the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy for Adults in Jersey.

The strategy aims to provide the best possible palliative and end-of-life care for adults in Jersey, focusing on providing personalised care and recognising individuals' needs. The Strategy means that Islanders will experience dedicated and coordinated care across various health and care settings. It will foster collaboration and integration among health and care providers, to create a comprehensive care network that supports individuals and their families throughout their end-oflife journey.

The launch event, which was held at Jersey Hospice Care, saw the strategy presented by Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Jersey Hospice Care, and James Grose, Chair of the End-of-Life Care Partnership. Attendees also heard from a family member whose mother was cared for by Jersey Hospice Care, and the Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Karen Wilson.

Deputy Wilson said: “The publishing of the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Strategy for Adults in Jersey is to be welcomed. It was vital when designing the strategy that all organisations which deliver palliative and end-of-life care worked together as they all have a role in delivering these services. This strategy will equip health and care professionals with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality palliative care, ensuring comfort, dignity, and respect for every individual.

“In my role as Minister for Health and Social Services I’ve been honoured to hear stories and experiences from Islanders. It’s these stories that have made it abundantly clear how needed this strategy is and what a difference it will make to Islanders in need of palliative and end-of-life care.“

Mike Palfreman, Chief Executive of Jersey Hospice Care, added: “We were delighted to be asked by Government to lead on the creation of this vital project and are equally delighted with the strategy that has come together with the input of many local professionals and organisations, both Government and voluntary. Jersey’s population is projected to grow and rapidly become older: the need and demand for palliative care services will increase significantly in line with this.

"Our vision is to ensure that all Islanders with a life-limiting illness will have access and informed choice to the right care, by the right person, at the right time and in the right place. Hospice has been and will continue to be at the heart of the community in working with our partners and Government to deliver this ambitious strategy and to ensure we all continue to make a difference to Islanders.”
