Jersey Children and Young People’s Survey 2021

Produced by the Statistics Jersey (Strategic Policy, Planning and Performance)
Authored by Statistics Jersey and published on 09 Mar 2022
Prepared internally, no external cost

Summary

This survey takes place every 2 years and all pupils in Year 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, including home-schooled pupils, were given the opportunity to take part in the survey during school time in the Autumn Term.

The survey was run independently by Statistics Jersey and includes topics suggested from a range of stakeholders across government together with an independent review by an ethics committee.

The survey covers a wide range of age-appropriate topics including:
  • health, wellbeing and self-esteem
  • alcohol, smoking and drugs
  • physical activity
  • sex
  • child sexual exploitation
  • bullying
  • being heard
Some sections (for exmple, drugs and sex) were not included, or were amended, for the younger children’s versions of the questionnaire.

The survey has been run since 1998, enabling changes in behaviours and attitudes to be monitored over time. Previous versions of the report were titled the ‘Health Related Behaviour Questionnaire’ and the ‘Jersey School Survey’. The results from the survey will allow everyone in the Island to better understand life from a child’s perspective, and help in the decision-making of those providing services to children.
