Transport and Technical Services improving the roads

20 August 2007

High friction road surfacing, which helps tyres grip the road better and can help reduce accidents, will be laid at the locations listed below, starting on Tuesday 20 August and running throughout the week.

· St Saviours Hill (approaching St Saviour’s Rd)

· St Clement’s Road (outside of La Rocquier School)

· La Croix au Lion (North of St Peter’s Village)

· La Route de St Aubin (La Perquage pedestrian crossing)

· Havre des Pas (Swimming Pool pedestrian crossing)

· Le Mont Felard (repairs to existing surface at bottom of hill)

· Don Road (repairs to existing surface at pedestrian crossing)

· La Rue de Pont Marquet (repairs to exsiting surface on bends)

· Bel Royal / Victoria Avenue (corner outside Bel Royal Motors)

To minimise disruption to motorists and commercial traffic Transport and Technical Services has arranged for the work to take place during the evening time, after 7.00pm. Temporary traffic management will be in place and motorists are advised to approach the work sites with caution and be prepared for some delay.

High friction surfacing helps tyres to grip the road better and is used to reduce skidding on the approaches to pedestrian crossings, and selected junctions and corners. The process is not noisy and involves the bonding of a high friction stone surfacing on to the existing road with a specialist resin. Once the surface has been applied, it has to be allowed to harden before it is safe for vehicles to use; this can take between six and nine hours. The time it takes to complete a site can vary greatly depending upon the weather conditions.

The treated areas will remain coned off until the hardening process is complete and the surface is safe to use.

“Transport and Technical Services is delivering a programme of road improvements throughout the Island and this is another step forward in making our roads safer and better maintained,” said John Richardson, Chief Officer, Transport and Technical Services.
