Jersey Fostering Week 2008

06 June 2008

A new recruitment campaign launches across the island on 7th June, looking to raise the profile of fostering and to encourage more people to become foster carers.

The campaign will encourage people to recognise the qualities that they already have and understand that the simplest skills can be the most fundamental when thinking about becoming a carer.

Jersey looks after between 70 & 80 children at any one time, many of whom already live with foster carers. Many other children however, are not able to have this opportunity as more carers are urgently needed. While almost anyone can apply to be a foster carer, as with any career, some people will be more suited to it than others. This recruitment campaign identifies the qualities needed to be a foster carer, and encourages people to recognise these in themselves.

Sean Pontin, Manager of Fostering & Adoption Jersey says, ‘Jersey needs all sorts of carers for all sorts of children. Foster carers have a vital role to play in giving children in care the best possible start in life. Foster carers must be able to offer the time, commitment, space and skills to care for children separated from their own families. Children in care can benefit enormously from the chance to experience a stable family life. If you think you are a good listener, resilient, flexible, optimistic and a great role models we would love to hear from you.’

Fostering & Adoption Jersey are holding a family fun night at Pure Adventure, Les Ormes from 6- 8.30pm on Friday 13th June and would like to invite potential carers and their family to join them to find out more.
