Minister addresses Conservative conference

04 October 2011

During a busy second day at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, Assistant Chief Minister, UK and International Relations, Senator Freddie Cohen received a warm reception for his speech at an Adam Smith Institute fringe event.

Speaking on wealth creation and economic growth, Senator Cohen addressed conference delegates on Monday 3 October alongside fellow speakers Exchequer Secretary to HM Treasury, David Gauke MP, John Redwood MP, and City A.M. Editor, Allister Heath.

Senator Cohen commented “I was pleased to see how enthusiastically delegates responded to the speech, which outlined the prudent way in which Jersey has managed its economy through balanced budgets and the avoidance of public debt. There has been a great show of interest in Jersey and our plans for future economic growth without growing the population, which will allow us to maintain high standards of social and welfare services and health and education provision. I was able to talk about Jersey’s expansion into new emerging markets, both from a financial services and from a new industries perspective. Again, I was pleased to see the support from delegates of Jersey’s position in the world and our continuing partnership with Britain.”

Senator Cohen left the conference on Monday evening to return to Jersey, while Senator Ozouf continued on to further appointments, including a meeting with Tourism and Heritage Minister, John Penrose MP, and Conservative peer and Chairman of the Conservative Muslim Forum, Lord Sheikh.
