Health and Social Services to be smokefree

21 February 2012

The director of the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre, Hilary Wareing, is visiting Jersey this week to discuss and support the implementation of HSSD’s smokefree policy with Health and Social Services staff.

Healthy environment

The policy, which comes into effect on 14 March, national non-smoking day, will cover all HSSD’s clinical and non-clinical buildings, including the Hospital, and will apply to all patients, clients, staff, visitors and contractors, with an aim of providing a safe and healthy environment for everyone who uses Health and Social Services.

The aim of the Tobacco Control Collaborating Centre, which has existed since 2004, is to work in the field of public health, examining the most effective ways to support the implementation of tobacco control policy into practice. This work is carried out with local government, and non governmental organisations.

Smokefree

During her visit to Jersey, Hilary Wareing will meet senior HSSD staff and nursing staff to talk about the implementation of the smokefree policy across HSSD, and give an overview of smokefree policies used across UK hospital sites, and share experience of putting these policies into practice.

Mrs Wareing said "Health and Social Services has recognised the need to protect staff, patients and visitors from the effects of tobacco smoke.  I am delighted to have an opportunity to support them in providing a smokefree environment."

Minister for Health and Social Services, Deputy Anne Pryke said "We are delighted to welcome Ms Wareing to Jersey to share her experiences with us. The decision to go smokefree throughout HSSD is one which we hope will benefit the whole community. The goal of this policy is to create a healthy environment for all employees, volunteers, clients, residents, patients, and visitors. The smokefree policy will allow Health and Social Services to lead the way and be an exemplar organisation in providing a smokefree environment."
