Jersey Sport advisory board appointed

22 December 2015

Following the appointment last week of Phil Austin as chairman of the Shadow Board for Sport, the members of the Board have now been appointed. The new members are: President of the Jersey Badminton Association, Jean Cross; President of the Jersey Squash and Racketball Association, Stephen Law; and marketing and communications professional, Tony Taylor.

The Shadow Board is a new independent group that has been set up to advise the Assistant Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for sport, Connétable Steve Pallett, on the creation of Jersey Sport, which in turn will take on responsibility for the development of sport in the Island from summer 2016.

The Board met for the first time with the Assistant Minister at today (22 December 2015), in order to discuss priorities and to set out a programme for the development work required.

Mr Austin said “I am delighted that such a strong Shadow Board has been recruited and that we are in a position to get down to work so quickly. The scale of the task, plus the need for Jersey Sport to be put in place and begin its work independently of Government, will stretch the skills of the new Board. However, given the calibre of members, I remain convinced that we will deliver against the terms of reference.”

Connétable Pallett said “I am delighted that such strong candidates have come forward to become members of the Jersey Sport Shadow Board. It gives me great confidence that Phil Austin and his colleagues have collectively such a strong background, not only in sport and sports administration but also commercially. I look forward to attending their inaugural Board meeting tomorrow and hearing from them their thoughts on how Jersey Sport could be developed.”
