The co-founder of a leading programme to inspire young people to become interested in design and engineering is in Jersey this week to teach Le Rocquier School pupils.

Le Rocquier is the first island school to introduce the digital engineering programme Design Engineer Construct! (DEC!) which offers GCSE-standard qualifications for secondary school students.

The learning programme uses industry-standard software and students will work alongside experts to complete innovative building design projects.

Land surveyor Alison Watson, who will be visiting Le Rocquier School tomorrow, and architect Dan Gibson formed the Design Engineer Construct qualification as a dedicated STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) focused creative curriculum opportunity.

The programme in Jersey has been developed in partnership with Skills Jersey, part of Children, Young People, Education and Skills, and is one of several initiatives being delivered in schools to promote STEM-focused learning activities in the school curriculum whilst learning from experts in the built environment industry.

The DEC programme is being delivered in partnership with J3 Ltd, the consortium planning the construction of Jersey’s new hospital. The construction of the planned new hospital will provide a unique opportunity for Le Rocquier students to learn core design, engineering and construction skills whilst gaining a fully accredited qualification.
