Funeral measures continue to protect Islanders in mourning

To protect Islanders and follow physical distancing measures, attendance at funerals continues to be limited to 10 close family members. The regulations - which were introduced on 8 April 2020 - have not changed, despite the Island moving into Level 3 of the Safe Exit Strategy.

Anyone attending a funeral should maintain at least two meters distance from anyone who is not a member of their household. Those who are required to isolate because they are vulnerable, or because they were in close contact with the deceased, cannot attend funerals.

The Chief Minister said: “I recognise that for those who have lost a loved one, their first instinct is to come together to mourn. While these regulations disrupt that very natural process, they have been introduced for a very good reason: to protect the health of mourners, and of the Island more generally.

“We are working with faith leaders, Public Health and funeral directors to protect Islanders, while still giving individuals the best opportunity we can to say goodbye to their loved ones.”

Jersey has enhanced protocols for the safe handling of bodies and dignified burials for any patients who have died, or are suspected to have died, from COVID-19.
