Students welcome A Level results

17 August 2023

Students in Jersey have today received their A Level results, achieving a comparable pass rate to students in England.

The overall pass rate for Jersey's A level results was 97.8%, compared to England's pass rate of 97.2%. 24.5% of all A levels taken by Jersey students were at A* and A, compared to 26.5% in England. For A*-C passes, Jersey students achieved 73.9% compared to 75.4%.

This is the first year that exam grading has returned to pre-pandemic processes. Due to COVID-19, summer examinations were cancelled in 2020 and 2021. Instead, students were assessed using Teacher Assessed Grades (TAG), which were awarded to students based on a range of evidence.

In 2022, students returned to sitting exams. To support the transition, the UK's Department for Education and examinations regulator, Ofqual, announced that students would be offered additional support, including changes to coursework, support materials, advance information, and less optional content.

Given that students sitting A Levels this year did not sit GCSE exams, some additional support has been retained in 2023, including changes to exam timetables, and the inclusion of support materials for some subjects.

Highlands sixth form students also attained excellent results today, with 96% achieving their professional and technical qualifications at the same level as A levels. A high proportion have already secured progression directly into employment, university, or continuing programmes at Highlands College.

Students who took the International Baccalaureate (IB) at Hautlieu school this year have achieved a 100% pass rate. This compares to a worldwide pass rate of 79.3%.

Students who have questions about Student Finance following their results can contact the team by calling 01534 449450 or emailing studentfinance@gov.je.

Minister for Children and Education, Deputy Inna Gardiner, said: "I offer congratulations to every single student who has received their results today.  Our students have worked very hard under very difficult circumstances, through the challenges of COVID-19. I would encourage you all to feel proud of your own individual results and wish you all the best of luck in the future.

"I'd also like to thank all the parents, carers and teachers who have supported young people through this important milestone in their lives."

The Skills Jersey Careers Guidance Team are available to offer advice on next steps for everyone receiving results today. Young people can book an appointment with the team by calling 01534 449440 or emailing skillsjersey@gov.je.

Skills Jersey

Skills Jersey Careers Guidance Team advise any students receiving their results today to:

  • Be proud – Students should be proud of their achievements, whether they receive the grades they were hoping for or not. There will be something out there that is right for everyone – so those receiving results should keep calm, look at all their options, and get as much advice as possible.
  • Stay calm – There is still time for those receiving their results to look at options, and to make a decision.
  • Speak up and seek advice – Students will be able to speak to careers teachers and careers advisers on results day, to talk through their results and their next steps.
  • Keep results at hand – Students should keep their results with them on results day, as they will need to have these to hand when speaking to advisers about their options.
  • Get information before making any decisions – the Careers Guidance Team can offer advice and support in the coming weeks.
