Electric vehicle and charger incentives launched

29 August 2023

Islanders can now get up to £3,500 towards the purchase of a new or used electric car or van, following the launch of a new Government of Jersey incentive scheme designed to support Islanders with making the switch away from petrol and diesel modes of transport.

The financial support, which can be used on vehicles costing up to £40,000, can be accessed through approved retailers and is for 35% of the vehicle cost, up to the maximum of £3,500.

Additionally, £300 off the price of electric mopeds and electric motorcycles is available through the scheme (for mopeds and motorcycles under £5,000).

To coincide with the launch, Islanders can also access £350 towards the installation of a charger at their home or small business, which can be applied for and installed via the scheme’s approved electricians.

Funding for the incentives was allocated through the Carbon Neutral Roadmap, agreed by the States Assembly in April 2022, to set Jersey on a path to net zero emissions by 2050.

The Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Deputy Hilary Jeune, said: “Transport is still responsible for around 40% of our carbon emissions in Jersey, so speeding up the uptake of electric vehicles is a way in which we will start to make real inroads towards our net zero targets.

“I appreciate and understand that the purchase of a vehicle can be a significant financial cost, whether new or used. We see the highest uptake of electric vehicles in jurisdictions that make them cheaper to buy, which is why we’ve launched these incentives today to do just that.

“The aim now is to get more electric vehicles into the Island. We know many Islanders are considering going electric with their next vehicle and this extra bit of financial support will hopefully help them make the switch.

“We also hope to see a reduction in the number of petrol and diesel vehicles coming into the Island as demand for that decreases due to Islanders going electric.”

Used vehicles are also eligible for the purchase scheme but must be new to the Island and bought through an approved retailer.

The schemes will run parallel to the Sustainable Transport Policy which supports active travel through improved cycling infrastructure, initiatives such as School Streets, and bus service improvements, to reduce overall motor car journeys in Jersey.
