Trailer registration

When you need to register a trailer

Some trailers must be registered with DVS if you travel to France or through a country that requires trailers to be registered:

  • trailers with a weight of 3,500 kilograms or more
  • commercial trailers with a weight of 750 kilograms or more. This includes transport for hire and reward, own-account transport, or any other commercial purposes

You must register your trailer before your trip and keep the registration document with you.

You do not need to register trailers you drive in Jersey or the UK.

Travelling with an unregistered trailer

If you travel abroad with an unregistered trailer, you could be stopped and prosecuted by the authorities of that country. This may result in:

  • being unable to continue your journey
  • receiving a fine
  • having your trailer taken off the road

Trailers you do not need to register

You do not need to register trailers you drive in Jersey or the UK or trailers with a weight of less than 3,500 kilograms such as:

  • horse trailers
  • caravans
  • other non-commercial

You can choose to register these trailers with DVS to avoid being stopped if you travel abroad.

Registration fee

It costs £34 to register a trailer and the registration lasts for the lifetime of the trailer.

Registering a trailer

Complete the online form below to register your trailer. You’ll need details of the owner, vehicle and trailer.

Apply to register your trailer

Contact us if you have difficulties using our online services and want to complete a paper application form.

Registration inspection

Once we reviewed your application, we’ll contact you to arrange a registration inspection.

The inspection takes around 30 minutes at DVS and you’ll need to bring:

  • your trailer, so we can check the chassis number
  • proof of identity with photo

You’ll need to pay the registration fee at the inspection. This can be by card, cash or cheque.

You’ll receive your registration document by post a few days after the inspection.

Getting and displaying the registration plate

Once you have your registration document, you'll need to get a registration plate made.

Both plates for the trailer and vehicle towing the trailer must be displayed at the back of your trailer. They do not need to be illuminated but must be clearly visible and as far away as possible from the towing vehicle's plate.

Contact us if you’re not sure where to display the plate on your trailer.

Selling or scrapping your trailer

If you sell your trailer, the buyer and seller must complete the transfer of ownership details on the back of the registration document. Find more details on how to transfer ownership of a vehicle.

Your trailer’s registration number is not transferrable to another trailer.

If your trailer is scrapped, you should return the registration document to DVS.
