Living in Jersey: Housing Regulations

Because of the shortage of housing in Jersey, it has been necessary to introduce legislation to restrict the purchase and leasing of accommodation. There are only two ways in which newcomers to the Island are likely to qualify to lease or buy accommodation. One way is to demonstrate that they can make a significant contribution to the Island’s tax revenues through the taxation of personal or corporate income. This is outside of the reach of most employees! Currently, the only other way is as an ‘essential employee’.

Essential employees are those who have specialist skills, knowledge and experience which is not available in Jersey. For example, teachers, nurses, doctors and some senior management posts may all be identified as posts where it is necessary to recruit from outside of Jersey.
