Regulation of Undertakings and Development
The Population Office is responsible for administering the Regulation of Undertakings and Development (Jersey) Law, 1973, as amended. This Law controls the carrying on of undertakings, being essentially any trade, business or profession. It is administered having regard to the need to regulate and manage demand on the resources of the Island, and to protect the integrity of the Island in commercial and financial matters. This is performed within the context of ensuing a balance between the need for economic growth and its demand on the Island's resources.
Under this law, no person shall, without permission -
(a) commence a new undertaking; (b) increase the number of persons engaged in an undertaking, unless he has been granted a licence so to do. The Law comprises - A policy statement ( 30Kb) indicates how the office applies the Law and the criteria required to meet its objectives. An appeal statement ( 12Kb) indicates how decisions can be appealed.
