Rent Control Tribunal

The Rent Control Law offers a statutory facility to enable a private sector tenant to appeal to an independent body, the Rent Control Tribunal, to have their rent reduced where they consider it to be excessive. It is applicable to rents on residential properties, but not commercial, and only to tenants. It should be noted that lodgers have no rights under this legislation.

The statutory provisions also enable landlords to apply to the Tribunal to increase the rents they charge if these have already come under the control of the Tribunal.

The legislation which provides these facilities is the Dwelling Houses (Rent Control) (Jersey) Law, 1946, and the associated regulations made in the same year. Amendments to both have been made since that time.
