Code of Practice

The States of Jersey Statistics Unit is responsible for the collection, analysis, production and dissemination of official statistics on the economy and for the Jersey Census.

The Statistics Unit’s aim is to provide a high quality statistical service for the government, people and businesses of Jersey, such that all users of data can have confidence in the accuracy of data that are produced. To achieve this, the unit:

  • produces timely and relevant statistics that are of use in policy making and in informing public debate;

  • publishes data to pre-announced dates;

  • respects the confidentiality of all data it collects;

  • utilises best methodology and keeps practices and procedures up to date; and

  • provides independent advice on statistics to the government, people and businesses of Jersey.

The Statistics Unit is located within the Chief Ministers Department for budgetary and management purposes, with the Head of Statistics reporting directly to the Chief Executive of Jersey.

However, the Unit has complete operational independence in the production and publication of official statistics.

The Head of Statistics, supported by the Unit, is also the government’s chief adviser on statistics. This wider role incorporates working with other departments on the development, quality, accuracy and independence of all official statistics produced by States of Jersey departments.

An independent Statistics Users Group was established in 1999 to “review and comment upon any official statistics prepared or proposed to be prepared, by, or on behalf of, the States of Jersey”. This group is currently being expanded and details of its new membership and activities will be provided from here.
