Pupil transfer

School transfer between phases

Pupils transfer from primary school to secondary school at the end of year 6. The relevant information can be found in the Information Pack for Parents - Primary/Secondary School Transfer and also in Secondary Education A Guide for Parents which outlines what parents may expect to find when their children enter the secondary sector.

14+ Transfer

At the age of 14 years pupils who are judged to be the most academically able and likely to follow academic courses of study to AS and A2 level may transfer to Hautlieu School. An explanatory leaflet is available from the school (tel. 736242) or online.

The criteria for admission to Hautlieu at 14+ are as follows:

  • an average cognitive ability test score of 109 or greater;
  • above average standards of performance in English, maths and at least four other subjects with science counting as two.

Transfer at 16+

For studentswho wish to continue their education post 16, there are two main options. Depending upon their results at GCSE and their selection of courses, they may apply for transfer to Hautlieu or to Highlands College or alternatively they may apply for entry to one of the four fee paying institutions that offer a sixth form education. In all cases, students should make direct contact with the appropriate institution.

Exceptional transfer requests

Requests for a pupil transfer between schools but outside the normal transfer between phases, will be considered and the outcome will depend upon the individual circumstances. Parents who have moved house and would prefer to move their children into the catchment area school should contact Jim Westwater on tel 449456. Such requests are normally granted provided there is capacity in the catchment area school. If there is not space available in the desired school, the parents may be given other options. When a family move house during a child's time in school, there is no obligation on them to move the child. Continuity of the child's education is considered important and parents may chose to have them continue in that school regardless of which catchment area they move into.

Transfer requests for other reasons should in the first instance, be discussed with the pupil's head teacher. Any decision relating to a request for a transfer is always taken with the best interests of the child as the main priority.

For advice or guidance contact Jim Westwater on tel. 449456.
