Young Enterprise

Young Enterprise is a national educational charity and with the support of local businesses run a primary, secondary and sixth form/college programme for students in Jersey .  Their aim is to encourage young people to be enterprising in order to succeed in their working life.  Each programme is based firmly on the principle of 'learning by doing'.

Primary Programme
Some of the Primary Schools have linked with a local business to deliver one or two of the modules designed for this age group.  Each module consists of five lessons of hands-on activities to develop their understanding of the workplace through a variety of themes, for example, our city, our world.  Your child's school will be able to tell you if they take part in this scheme.

Secondary Programme
Project Business and Learn to Earn are two programmes which are delivered by a Business Partner and the Teacher  Partner in some of our secondary schools.
Project Business gives a student an insight into economic and business life through practically based activities over six lessons.  Learn to Earn focusses the student on the relationship of learning and the achievement of personal lifestyle goals.  Your son or daughter's Head of Year will be able to tell you whether their school takes part in either of these programmes.

Sixth form / college programme
Students from different schools/colleges form their own company. They elect a board of directors from amongst their peers, raise share capital, and market and finance a product or service of their own choice. At the end of the year they present a report and accounts to their shareholders. Students gain experience of the real world: taking responsibility and being accountable to their shareholders for the running of the business.  All the companies have volunteer advisers from a local business to support them.  Each September a member of the Young Enterprise Area Board and the Careers Office visit all the sixth forms and Highlands College to introduce the Company Programme to the students.  Details of the 2006 - 2007 Company Programme
