Economic Development

Economic Development is responsible for policy and licensing matters relating to Air and Sea Services to and from the United Kingdom, Europe and the other Channel Islands.

This function directly addresses in-Island start up and business growth activity. Support for businesses will be provided through public and private sector partnerships.

Economic Development is responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for the development of the Island's construction industry.

The Trading Standards Service enforces consumer protection laws and provides a comprehensive consumer and business advisory service.

Jersey has a long established and reputable international finance industry and is unrivalled jurisdiction for the successful conduct of e-business. This section serves as a reference point to web links for the finance industry and essential guidance for potential investors in the Island economy.

Economic Development is charged with the administration of Jersey's function within the Channel Islands Lottery as well as Gambling Control.

Currently export trade, outside the financial services sector, is largely restricted to agricultural products. Whilst the agricultural sector is expanding, a key element is to help other businesses benefit from exporting.

Jersey Harbours is responsible for the operation and successful management of Jersey’s port, harbours and marinas.

Economic Development is responsible for marketing Jersey externally as a visitor destination and for its produce, including the famous Jersey Royal new potato. The integration of activity undertaken by Economic Development in support of all of the Jersey brands strengthens the position of the Island in the global market and provides the most favourable environment in which our Finance, Tourism and Agricultural industries are encouraged to flourish.

The Economic Development Minister is responsible for administering the Regulation of Undertakings and Development Law. This Law is to control the carrying on of undertakings and to regulate further development.

Economic Development recognises the need to work together with Jersey's retail sector to enable existing retailers (both food and non-food) to develop their business, by tackling issues that may affect the sector. It is also keen to advise and support any business/individual considering Jersey as a potential destination to develop a future retail business.

Economic Development is jointly responsible in the development of a rural economic strategy which promotes growth, efficiencies and diversification within the countryside and which protects and enhances the natural environment.

Tourism Quality Development is responsible for all matters relating to legislation applicable to the laws governing Tourism.

Trade Development

The Enterprise and Business Development team works with Jersey employers and employees to raise skills levels and improve business performance and productivity.
