Safety of Navigation Order - Safety of Life at Sea Convention Consultation (Closes 11 July 2008)
The Shipping (Jersey) Law 2002, came into force in 2004. This provides the platform for modern safety, anti-pollution and security measures for ships. For Jersey to be able to enforce some of the key subordinate legislation, the United Kingdom ratified the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention on behalf of the Island in 2004. This was followed by legislation concerning Chapter XI-1 of the Convention relating to ship and port security. The intention is to continue to introduce relevant chapters in response to perceived need. Chapters that are of little relevance to the types of ships in Jersey waters or registered in Jersey will not be pursued unnecessarily.
Purpose of Consultation
1. To draw attention to the proposed new Safety of Navigation Order for three key groups of mariners
- Owners and Masters of small ships in Jersey waters (in this case meaning vessels under 150 GT);
- Owners and Masters of Jersey ships world-wide;
- Owners and Masters of all commercial ships in Jersey waters.
2. To seek comment on the proposed changes as they would particularly affect local small boat owners.
