Places that provide free early learning

Different types of early learning providers – day nurseries, preschools and primary school nursery classes – offer different benefits and attendance options.

All free early learning is up to 20 hours a week, 38 weeks a year, during term-time only.

Day nurseries

Day nurseries are open outside of school times – eg 7.30am to 6pm – and some are open all year round (50 weeks a year). This may help allow working parents to have their child in a nursery which provides both childcare and early years education.

Day nurseries are for children from birth until they start school. However, some nurseries may only take children in certain age ranges.

A full list of registered Nursery Education Fund (NEF) nurseries, which offer free hours, is available on the Jersey Child Care Trust website.

Preschools

Preschool hours generally reflect the school day or offer mornings only, but hours may differ between preschools.

Preschools are for children from two years to school entry age, who are toilet-trained.

A full list of registered NEF preschools, which offer free hours (in the year before your child starts school), is available on the Jersey Child Care Trust website.

Primary school nursery classes

The States of Jersey provides early learning in 17 of its 22 primary schools. You can buy further sessions of one or two hours a day on top of the 20 free hours.
