Gas safety

06 October 2022

Gas Safety Week 2022 (12 to 18 September) was cancelled by the organisers, Gas Safe Register, following the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the national week of mourning.  Consequently none of the pre-planned media releases that were expected to raise awareness of this important initiative were published.

The Health and Safety Inspectorate would still like to remind consumers of steps they can take to ensure they stay safe, including not attempting DIY on gas appliances and being aware of the warning signs of unsafe appliances such as dark or sooty staining around an appliance.

It is important to stay aware of the warning signs of an unsafe gas appliance and to contact a Gas Safe registered engineer if you are worried something is wrong.  Now is a good time to have gas appliances serviced before they are turned on for winter heating.

Domestic landlords are also reminded of the requirement to have an annual gas safety inspection of the dwelling carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.  The duty under the 'Public Health and Safety (Rented Dwellings – Minimum Standards and Prescribed Hazards) (Jersey) Order, 2018' applies where there is a gas supply to the dwelling, whether or not any appliances are connected to that supply.
