Construction: forthcoming initiative on first aid

07 June 2021

The Health and Safety Inspectorate will shortly be carrying out a series of focused visits to construction sites to review the arrangements for first aid.

From visits carried out this year, it is has become apparent that there is a varied approach to the provision of first aid on sites. In one instance the contents of the first aid box were found to have expired in 2008.

Regulation 36 of the Management in Construction Regulations (Jersey) 2016 requires adequate first aid on site for the initial treatment of any foreseeable injuries and illnesses that may arise, and the provision of suitably trained personnel to take charge of first aid arrangements and manage the initial response. The level of training and numbers of people with nominated responsibility for first aid on site should be determined by risk assessment.

The Health and Safety Regulator Officer will be making visits to sites during June to assess the arrangements in place and to offer guidance where required. An article will be published in July setting out the findings of the initiative.

Whilst a cross section of sites will be selected for a visit, if you would like to pre-arrange a visit to your site, please contact the Health and Safety Inspectorate on 447300 or email hsi@gov.je
