The Community Jobs Fund scheme is designed to fund short term paid employment for young or long-term unemployed jobseekers where there is a clear community benefit from the role or work. Organisations apply for funding for a role they have identified, proving that the role will provide a tangible community benefit and can claim for up to six months’ employment at minimum wage and up to £1,400 of additional funding for equipment, materials or costs related directly to the role per person on the scheme.
These positions are designed to be able to give Back to Work clients the opportunity to develop skills and work experience in the local community that can be used to further their employment prospects, as well as to conduct meaningful work to aid the local community that may otherwise have not been undertaken. The scheme is not designed to subsidise the continued long term employment of these roles.
The amount spent by calendar year on the Community Jobs Fund since its inception in September 2013 to the end of 2016 are as follows.

The table below shows the number of positions created under the Community Jobs fund from 2013 to the end of 2016. Roles last up to six months so may spread into two calendar years – this table represents the start date of the role.
Although there is no restriction to the type of business that can apply for a Community Jobs Fund role, as long as clear additional community benefit can be demonstrated, to date the scheme has been used primarily by charities and the public sector.
