Please tell me what procedures are in place to check the road worthiness of commercial waste vehicles and skip lorries operating in the island.

How many of these checks have been made in the past five years on vehicles operated by WP Recycling and Skinners Skips?

Response

Currently the Department for Infrastructure carries out a minimum of 24 road checks per year in conjunction with the States of Jersey and Honorary Police to check the roadworthiness of all types of vehicle. In addition, the States of Jersey Police carry out their own road checks on a regular basis.

Furthermore, all oversize vehicles requiring a permit (P30), to circulate in the Island on a permanent basis, must undergo a vehicle inspection test. These permits are restricted in that they are only issued if it is in the public interest for them to operate.

There is currently no requirement for all commercial vehicles to be checked, however, the Department will be proposing a new Vehicle Operator Licensing scheme which will initially require all commercial vehicles over 7.5 tonnes to be maintained, records kept and to be inspected by the Department on an annual basis.

Neither W P Recycling nor Skinner Skips have oversize vehicles (P30's) therefore no road worthiness checks have been carried out on their vehicles in the last five years.
