Request

A

Please can you tell me where I can find the regulations or law that relate to the Jersey Bursary that funds the masters and postgraduate students these normally number a max of 12 a year of £10,000 each?

B

Where can I find the budget for this bursary in the States accounts?

C

What appeal process is there for this bursary, and who sits on any panel?

D

When a parent funds two students at a time for an undergraduate degree there is a different calculation and they receive a slightly higher grant.

When a parent is receiving a grant for an undergraduate student and a student at masters level at the same time but does not receive a grant for the masters student, does the same calculation for two students studying at the same time apply giving the undergraduate student a slightly higher grant than a single student would receive?

Response

A

The Jersey Bursary, that funds postgraduate studies, is not outlined in law. A guide to postgraduate financing can be found at the following link:

Financing post-graduate courses (student finance)

Additional information is provided by the following document titled “2017 - 2018 Guide to Applicants for Postgraduate Awards”

B

The budget for the Jersey Bursary can be found under section 9.9 “Social Benefits Payments” of the Financial Report and Accounts 2016. It is located on page 135 of the document under the heading of “Education, Sport and Culture: Student Grants”. Please find the document at the following link:

C

The Jersey Bursary is a competitive funding opportunity and is based on an application process. Shortlisted candidates are then required to present to a panel.

The panel is made up of the following individuals:

  • the Minister for the Education Department or his representative
  • a senior academic adviser from the UK
  • Director for Education Department or his representative
  • Student Finance Officer
  • an independent

D

Yes. The two students would be used in the calculation for this scenario.
