Request

I would like to submit a request for crime statistics detailed by area, to cover all of The Channel Islands, and to start as far back in time as possible, up to the most recent records.

I have been able to find summarised data for Jersey, however I would like this by postcode or if this is not available by the most specific area as possible please.

The information required at this level is a list of each crime, with type of crime, location details, and date for each individual crime.

I am most interested in Theft / Burglary / Robbery (particularly theft from home, so please can you let me know if these crimes fall under a particular definition?), along with General antisocial behaviour, and Arson. If all other crimes could also be listed, whether by specific crime type or in an “other” category, that would be most appreciated.

Response

Not all the information required by the requester is held by the States of Jersey Police.

Information about crimes committed on other Channel Islands will held by Guernsey Police. Guernsey does not have an equivalent Freedom of Information Law.

The request is refused on the basis that to locate, retrieve and extract all the information requested over the past 40 years, would exceed the cost limit provisions allowed under Article 16 of the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 and the 12.5 hours maximum allowed under regulation 2 (1) of the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014.

Limited information is available in the annual police reports which are published on the States of Jersey Police Web site.

Article 16 - A scheduled public authority may refuse to supply information if cost excessive

(1) A scheduled public authority that has been requested to supply information may refuse to supply the information if it estimates that the cost of doing so would exceed an amount determined in the manner prescribed by Regulations.

Regulation 2 (1) of the Freedom of Information (Costs) (Jersey) Regulations 2014 allows an authority to refuse a request for information where the estimated cost of dealing with the request would exceed the specified amount of the cost limit of £500. This is the estimated cost of one person spending 12.5 working hours in determining whether the department holds the information, locating, retrieving and extracting the information.
