Within the States report, it says that Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) makes up 40% of local Cardiovascular Disease fatalities. Would it be safe to say this makes it the Island’s biggest killer? Looking at the stats it looks like all cancers combined kill more people than all CVD (hence Cardiovascular Disease being second leading cause) however it may be that CHD kills more people than any one type of cancer?

The Hospital collects patient data on TrakCare, which is a healthcare information system. TrakCare was implemented in June of 2011; therefore, we cannot offer data prior to June of 2011 and the figures will not reflect the entire year.
The Cardiology Department’s outpatient appointments figures by year are as follows:

Accurate data regarding inpatients who receive ongoing treatments for heart conditions in the Hospital cannot be collated due to the complexity of clinical coding, multiple conditions of a single patient, and movement within the Hospital. However, the Consultant Cardiologist has stated that there are approximately 4 to 5 inpatients per week, on average.
The Hospital does not have access to records regarding patients who are receiving ongoing treatments in the community.
The Cardiology Department does not currently have community nurses.

The Hospital codes heart attacks under 6 categories that can be grouped as Myocardial Infarctions.

Hereditary heart conditions are coded under 6 categories in the Hospital. Together, they are grouped as Congenital Malformations.
The Hospital can provide data for all persons of all ages treated at the hospital for Congenital Malformations. Some pregnant patients are transferred off Island before or just after giving birth, therefore, we cannot provide statistics specifically for babies.

Ischaemic Heart Disease accounts for 11% of all deaths (40% of deaths from circulatory disease). Strokes account for 9% of all local deaths (30% of all circulatory diseases) and lung cancer around 7% of all deaths (20% of all cancers).
