Which States of Jersey department pays for the supply of prescription drugs when a GP issues a prescription to be collected at a General Pharmacy?

B

Which States of Jersey department pays for the supply of prescription drugs when a Consultant or Hospital Department issues a prescription to be collected from the Hospital Pharmacy or a General Pharmacy?

Response

A

The supply of prescription drugs when a GP issues a prescription to be collected at a General Pharmacy is paid for through the Health Insurance Fund (HIF). The HIF is administered by the Social Security Department.

If a GP issued a prescription for a medicine which is not on Social Security’s approved list under the Health Insurance Fund, it would be treated as a private prescription and the patient would pay.

B

If the consultant / hospital outpatient prescription is dispensed at the hospital pharmacy then the Health Department pays. If a patient takes a hospital prescription to a community (General) pharmacy then this would be treated as a private prescription and the patient would pay.
