Request

I would like to ask if a couple with two siblings with a rare genetic illness. That on the other country it's obligate by law that the family brothers, sisters mother and father gets tested for it, what is the procedures and award free genetic test here in Jersey?  The condition is "pseudohypoparathyroidism type 1a" (with albright hereditary osteodystrophy).

Response

Any referral for genetic testing would need to come to the hospital via the family’s GP. If this relates to the children, the referral would be made to the paediatricians. If it relates to the adults, the referral in this instance would be made to the Endocrine Services.

Genetic testing is undertaken off-Island, in that any blood samples etc would be sent to the appropriate laboratory for testing.

There may be a charge payable for the GP referral but any subsequent hospital treatment is free of charge to anyone eligible under the Residents and Non-residents Charging Policy; which is available to view in the link below.
