Working out the percentage change in prices
For dates from 1989 onwards you can use the inflation calculator to find out the percentage change in prices between 2 periods in time or to re-value a sum of money (for example if you want to work out how much maintenance payments or rent has gone up between 2 dates if these are to be adjusted using the RPI).
Alternatively, you can calculate the percentage change in prices between 2 periods of time using this formula with RPI index figures:
[(Later date RPI - Earlier date RPI)/ Earlier date RPI] x 100
or you can re-value a sum of money using this formula with RPI index figures:
Sum of money (£) x (Later date RPI/ Earlier date RPI)

What is the Retail Prices Index?
The Retail Prices Index (RPI) is the main measure of inflation in Jersey. It measures the change from quarter to quarter in the price of the goods and services purchased by an average household in Jersey.
The index is compiled using a large and representative selection of over 500 separate goods and services, with price movements for each measured at a representative range of outlets.
The RPI is commonly used in private contracts for the uprating of maintenance payments and housing rents. It is also used in wage negotiations. It is sometimes referred to as the 'Cost of Living' although strictly speaking it is not a cost of living index.
What is the RPI(X)?
The RPI(X) is the RPI eXcluding mortgage interest payments, often considered as a measure of underlying inflation.
Do you publish forecasts for the Retail Prices Index?
No, the Statistics Unit does not publish forecasts for the RPI, however the Economics Unit regularly publishes an Economic outlook newsletter which includes an inflation forecast.

How are the representative goods and services that are priced in the RPI chosen?
To ensure that the RPI remains representative of consumer spending patterns the items that are priced in compiling the index and their associated weights are reviewed approximately every 5 years.
This report published in March 2007 on the latest Review of the Basket of Goods and Services describes the review process and explains how and why the various items in the RPI basket are chosen.
