Infectious Disease Service

Infectious disease clinics operate on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon and can be accessed through GP/consultant referral.
Infection Control
Location: General Hospital, Gloucester Street
The infection control team offers all members of health care staff, patients, visitors and public advice in the prevention and control of infection in the clinical setting. The team also maintains links with nursing and residential homes and other health care facilities including primary care, schools and other institutions. It is anticipated community infection control will be addressed with the appointment of a community infection control nurse to the team.
Nurse led infection control clinics run in parallel with the afternoon infectious disease clinics.
Staff Immunisation and Infection Control Occupational Health
Location: General Hospital, Gloucester Street
The staff immunisation service undertakes pre-employment screening/administration of occupational health vaccines to those staff who have direct patient care or contact with contaminated instruments/contaminated specimens.
Blood borne viral service
Location: General Hospital, Gloucester Street
The Blood borne viral service offers
· Blood borne viral screening to anyone who has been at risk
· Support and advice to all HIV, Hepatitis B & C positive persons
· Instruction and support to patients who are undergoing treatment
· The administration of appropriate vaccinations
· Auditing service delivery
Genito-Urinary Medicine - Sexual Health
Location; General Hospital, Gloucester Street
Outpatient department – Gwyneth Huelin Wing
A free, comprehensive, confidential patient-centred service is available to all members of the community and can be accessed through self direct referral, GP or via other organisations (e.g. Family Planning Clinic)
Three evening clinics operate on a first come first served basis and ALL AGE GROUPS. No appointment is necessary.
Tuesday: 5:00pm-6.30pm (male night)
Wednesday: 5.00pm-6.30pm (female night)
Thursday: 5.00pm-6.30pm (male & female night)
Limited timed appointments are available during normal working hours (9am-5pm)
Some patients may also need referral to the afternoon infectious disease clinic.
Over 90% of clinic patients are seen on the same day. All patients are seen within 3 working days. On attending the Sexual Health Clinic all patients are issued with a unique number which is used for identification purposes. All sexual health notes are stored separately and securely from hospital notes. Test results are never given out to any third party unless requested by the patient.
