Pathology Department
LOCATION
There are four specialities which make up Pathology are found in the General Hospital, St Helier, Jersey. They are accredited by Clinical Pathology Accreditation UK Ltd. and conform to their Quality Standards.
The Department is open each weekday to receive routine samples from 08.00 to 17.30 and patients can have blood samples taken with a request form between 09.00 and 12.00.
Hospital Blood Tests - A New Location from 4th October 2006
Hospital Blood Tests: The new location for most public patients requiring blood tests will be the old dental department, adjacent to the Newgate Street Entrance of the General Hospital. This area is shared with the Physiotherapy reception area and the out of hours GP service.
Access is direct from the Newgate Street (Patriotic Street) Outpatient entrance ramp. Please do not use the Ante-natal clinic as a passageway.
Blood Donors: Will continue to be seen in the existing Donor Room within the Pathology Laboratory by written timed appointment. Please report to the donor nurse/donor organiser in the donor room.
Private Patient's Blood Tests & Booked Appointment Patients: Will continue to be seen in the Pathology Laboratory. Please report initially to the receptionist at the entrance to Pathology on the main corridor.
Cellular Pathology (Histology, Cytology, Mortuary): Processes tissue samples, fluids and aspirates for microscopical diagnosis of disease
Reports on cervical smears as part of the Jersey cervical smear screening program.
The mortuary acts as both a hospital and public facility.

Chief Scientific Officer-Cellular Pathology
Clinical Chemistry: (also known as clinical biochemistry or chemical pathology) is the study of chemical and biochemical mechanisms of the body in relation to disease, mostly through the analysis of body fluids such as blood or urine. The department provides a comprehensive 24 hour service, including clinical advice, to all clinical specialties within Health and Social Services and a routine service for local General Practitioners.

Haematology: Provides a comprehensive clinical and analytical service to aid the diagnosis of many disorders including:- infection, anaemia, leukaemia, malignancy and bleeding disorders. Supports surgery, trauma, bleeding disorders and cancer therapy with blood, blood products and clinical advice.
The oral anticoagulant monitoring clinic and the Jersey Blood Donor Service are provided from within the department.

Microbiology: Information and assistance with the diagnosis, management and prevention of infection, directly and via an infection control team run by Sister Julie le Masurier which provides hospital, DOH occupational health infection control and increasingly community based infection control (MRSA search and destroy policy has achieved one of the lowest MRSA bacteraemia rates in the UK and Europe.)
The laboratory with Jane Carpenter, Alison Cabot as managers providing CPA accredited bacteriology , virology(including chlamydia NATS and microbiological screening of blood donors), mycology for the hospital and primary care with associated clinical advice as needed as well as environmental and food microbiology.
The GUM Department with Sister Donna Rees provides 3 free access GUM clinics per week and an appointment system which also covers HIV (more than 90% patients seen the same day, all patients seen within 3 working days); expanding chlamydia screening; exploring UAT and coordination GUM services; participating in chlamydia genotyping study with Southampton.
Clinical Microbiology
Provides a wide range of tests for the diagnosis and management of bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infections and 3 clinics per week are run including an outpatient intravenous antibiotic service with specialist nurses and Lorna Corfield as hepatitis sister.
Environmental Microbiology
This includes food analysis, testing of well and borehole waters, swimming pools, shellfish analysis and the screening of contacts involved in food poisoning outbreaks.
The department participates in all National Quality Assurance schemes relevant to its services
