Where are we? General Hospital, The Parade, St Helier
How to contact usThe department is open between 0815-1700, Monday to Thursday and until 1630 on Fridays; during these hours general enquiries can be dealt with on
622844.
Outside of these hours a service is provided for urgent and emergency examinations. On occasions some examinations (MRI) are performed in the evenings or at weekends; this helps to keep waiting lists to a minimum.
What services do we provide?
X-ray - this examination produces the traditional image that most people are familiar with. It is created by a beam of radiation being passed through the body to form a 'shadow' on the x-ray film.
Ultrasound - is a diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. No ionising radiation is used during this procedure.
CT (Computed Tomography) - for this examination you will be asked to lie through the 'polo mint' shaped scanner; it uses x-rays to produce images of slices through the body.
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) - uses a strong magnetic field and radiofrequencies to produce images of slices through the body. An MRI scanner does not use x-rays.
Mammography - is imaging of the breast. This can be done using x-rays and/or Ultrasound. The staff also work within The Jersey Breast Screening Service at Le Bas Centre.
Our Staff:
Consultant Radiologist - is a Doctor who interprets or 'reads' the images to produce a report; is responsible for carrying out procedures under radiological guidance such as biopsies; and undertakes treatments, for example, the unblocking of blood vessels.
Radiographer - (white/maroon uniform) technically trained in each specialist area to conduct your examination and produce the appropriate images. Some Radiographers undertake additional training and conduct specialist examinations and ultrasound scans; others interpret x-rays .
Assistant Practitioner - (white/maroon striped unifrom) is qualified to produce routine x-ray images within a defined area of practice, under the supervision of a radiographer.
Assistant - (white/lilac uniform) to assist you and the radiographer and to offer technical support.
Nursing Sister - (navy uniform) works with the Radiologist; is a specialist nurse and will support and care for you during the examination.
Secretarial Team - Each Consultant Radiologist has an appointed secretary who will type your results and deal with your enquiries.
Clerical Team - (light blue/white uniform) will send out your appointment, meet you on arrival and administer the film filing and reporting process.
Radiation Risks:
Rigorous checks are in place to ensure the safety of radiation machinery for patients and staff. This department complies fully with all the relevant legislation that governs the use of radiation.
Radiation dose levels in this department are regularly monitored and are well below the national average when compared to the United Kingdom. Please remember that if you have any queries regarding radiation risk or associated issues, the radiographer who carries out the examination will be only too happy to discuss these with you.
What are our charges?
The States of Jersey apply a charge to patients referred for radiological examination by their GP. This is currently £15.70 for X-ray, Ultrasound and Mammography examinations; and £21.00 for CT or MRI scans (June 2007). The charge is payable on attendance at the Radiology Reception - all forms of payment are accepted. No charge is made to patients on presentation of a valid Health Insurance Exemption (HIE) card or those referred by a hospital consultant. Private patients are sent an invoice for which private rates apply.
Parking and Disabled facilities:
The nearest parking areas are on the ground floor of Patriotic Street car park (charges apply) or adjacent to the Parade Gardens. Patients may be dropped off at the Gwyneth Huelin entrance where the hostesses in the Outpatients reception will assist you in making your way to Radiology. Disabled toilet facilities are available in the department.
