Renal Unit

The Renal Unit is based in the General Hospital in the centre of St Helier, and is most easily accessed through the Outpatients entrance in the Gwyneth Huelin Wing in Newgate Street near Patriotic Street multi-storey car park.

The department relocated to a modern, well equipped unit in the summer of 2002. The state of the art facilities are used for detecting, preventing and treating the entire spectrum of kidney disorders seen in the adult population. Those people who may loose their natural kidney function are treated by means of dialysis, both haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. A significant number of individuals will go on to have kidney transplants and these are looked after by the unit also. Individuals with other kinds of transplant such as heart transplants and pancreas transplants are also followed up by the specialist staff of the unit.

There are 15 dialysis stations, four of which are individual rooms. We use Gambro / Hospal machines.

Each dialysis station has its own television screen with a free local telephone service. Patients can also watch a DVD or Video of their choice.

The Unit is staffed by a team of qualified dialysis nurses and a full-time nephrologist.

We accept patients with permanent vascular access.
