What is Rehabilitation
If you have been referred to the unit, you may be wondering “what is rehabilitation?” Rehabilitation aims to reduce disability experienced by someone as the result of a disease or event. In contrast to medical treatment which involves something being done to you (for example an operation or a course of drugs), rehabilitation is a process which requires your active participation (and where relevant, that of your carers). Successful rehabilitation requires a partnership between yourself, your family and carers and the members of the rehabilitation team. This starts with establishing your overall aim (for example, to be able to move safely around your home, to be able to prepare a simple meal). Different staff will develop activities with you in order to enable you to work towards achieving these goals. As goals are achieved, further ones may be agreed until the overall aim is achieved. In some cases, you may not manage to achieve a goal and you may therefore need to discuss setting alternative goals that are more achievable for you. Rehabilitation may be a long, hard process and your motivation and determination will be important to the achievement of your goals. It is very usual to feel tired and discouraged at times but you can rely on the support and interest of the rehabilitation team.
