LOCATION: General Hospital. Tel: 00 44 (0) 1534 622559
WHAT WE DO
If a child is thought to have a visual problem it can be referred to the Orthoptic Department via its GP, school nurse, school doctor, the health visitor or the eye clinic. The eyes are examined and if it is found that the child has reduced vision further tests are undertaken to determine what treatment is required to correct their problem.
An adult may be referred to the Orthoptic Department via their GP or from a hospital doctor. They may be referred if they have double vision or if they require eye exercises. They may also be referred if they have had a stroke or head injury which causes problems with their vision.
WHAT SERVICES ARE PROVIDED
The Orthoptic Department provides a range of services for patients from birth to elderly care. In children the primary role is to ensure normal visual development and in adults the role is to detect and manage problems of muscle imbalance which may produce troublesome symptoms.
