Day Surgery Unit

The Day Surgery Unit is most easily accessed through the Outpatients entrance in the Gwyneth Huelin Wing of the General Hospital in Newgate Street near Patriotic Street multi-storey car park. This entrance closes at 7pm although it will still allow people to leave via its doors.

The staff at the Day Surgery Unit look forward to welcoming you or your relative to our unit. Our aim is to make a persons stay as comfortable as possible.

If you are caring for another person then please read the information on this page as it will help you to look after them when they are at home.

If you, or any patient you know, cannot keep their appointment, please phone either the pre-admission nurse or the Day Surgery Unit. This place can then be given to another person and you will receive another date.

People are welcome to accompany patient's to the unit. The person accompanying will later be phoned with a time to return and collect the patient. The patient will not be allowed home until the person accompanying them has arrived. If the patient is a young child then a second adult will also be required to accompany them home.

If a patient is due to leave the Unit after 7pm then you may still park on the ramp outside Gwyneth Huelin Wing, however, you must walk around and enter the hospital through the main entrance in Gloucester Street before leaving via the Gwyneth Huelin Wing exit. If this is inconvenient then you are welcome to come in before 7pm and wait in the Day Surgery Unit lounge.

There are some simple, but important things for you to remember.

The patient must have a responsible adult with them at all times for the first 24 hours after their operation.

Any tablets given to the patient must be taken as directed on the container.

For the next 48 hours the patient MUST NOT:-

• Drive
• Operate machinery
• Make any legal decisions
• Drink alcohol

For urgent advice the Day Surgery Unit operates a nurse on call system 7 days a week.

Should you need to contact someone once you are at home a nurse will be available.
