Detox/Counselling

Home

Detoxification is a process of helping someone to rid the body of drugs in a way that is medically safe and with the least possible discomfort.

Most people prefer to be detoxified at home because they feel more comfortable in their own familiar environment where they are safe and secure. They also feel that they are better able to handle their cravings and cope with the pressures of being offered drugs while being at home.

Home detoxification involves twice daily visits from a nurse who monitors their physical condition and ensures that the clients take the correct medication in the right quantity.

The procedure is discontinued if there is any indication of further illegal drug use.

Hospital

Detoxification in the Hospital is a voluntary procedure and recommended in cases where it is either medically unsafe to detoxify at home or if the client lives alone and has no support.

The stay in hospital usually lasts seven days and involves the use of certain types of medication that are tapered off during the stay including Lofexidine, Methadone and Subutex.

Advice

Detoxification is the first stage in getting someone off drugs. Staying off drugs is the next stage and this is achieved with counselling support and advice to help the client cope with the cravings and learning to live without drugs.
