Prescribing Services

The Alcohol and Drugs Service provides a range of treatments to help people get off drugs.

The Methadone Programme

An assessment is carried out to determine the user's suitability for the programme, their dosage and the duration of likely treatment. Methadone is then prescribed on a reducing basis over a period of time convenient to the individual's requirements.

Clients are expected to consume Methadone at the chemist every day, attend regular key-worker sessions and provide random urine samples.

The Subutex Programme

Clients are assessed as to their suitability for the programme, their dosage and the duration of likely treatment. Subutex is then prescribed on a reducing basis over a period of time convenient to the individual's requirements.

Non-Opiates

This is a drug such as Lofexidine and is commonly used to detox someone from opiates such as heroin and Methadone either at home or in hospital.

This process usually lasts a week.

Opiate-Blockers

After detoxification from opiates, such as heroin or Methadone, some clients may benefit from the use of the drug Naltrexone, which is an opiate-blocker.

This means that it will block the effect of opiate use thereby preventing the client from feeling the need to use heroin.

Naltrexone is available through the Service providing the client produces a urine sample which is opiate free.
