Pictorial Warnings on Tobacco Products Consultation

The placing of pictorial health warnings on tobacco products is an important contribution to public health.

One example of a picture we are consulting you on is shown below. Do you think this would encourage people to quit smoking?

In Jersey, the decision to legislate for the formalisation of written warnings and to introduce pictorial health warnings came from the Health and Social Services Committee in June 2005 and has recently been endorsed by the Health Minister Senator Ben Shenton.

In 1996 the States of Guernsey approved a package of Tobacco Control measures. The present Health and Social Services Department will shortly put in place an Order introducing pictorial warnings.

The purpose of this consultation is to share with the general public and stakeholders our plans for formalising these arrangements and to invite views on some of the specific detail of the plans.

The key areas on which we are seeking feedback are:

·       Choice of picture warnings
·       Enforcement procedures
·       Timescales for implementation

However, comments are welcomed on any aspect of this consultation document.
