Au Pair

Immigration Categories - Au Pairs

This information explains what the Immigration Directions say about au pairs. While it is only a guide, it aims to answer the questions which are most likely to arise.

If you need more information about an immigration matter please contact us at the Customs & Immigration Service

When you contact us please provide the following:

  • your name (as in your passport);

  • your date of birth;

  • your nationality; and

  • your Home Office reference number (if you have one).

What is an au pair placement ?

  • An au pair placement is an arrangement whereby a single person aged from 17 to 27 inclusive comes to Jersey to study English and lives for up to two years, from the date of first entry, as a member of an English speaking family; and

  • helps in the home for a maximum of 5 hours per day with at least two full days off per week in return for a reasonable allowance and the use of a room on his or her own.

Which countries are included in the au pair scheme ?

An au pair must be a national of one of the following countries:

Andorra
Macedonia
Bosnia-Herzegovina
Monaco
Croatia
San Marino
Faroe Islands
Turkey
Greenland

Nationals of the European Economic Area can, of course, enter Jersey to work or study without any formalities.

Do I need a visa as an au pair ?

Nationals of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Turkey must obtain a visa from their designated British Diplomatic Post before travelling to Jersey.

How do I qualify to come to Jersey as an au pair ?

You must show that you are seeking entry to take up an arranged au pair placement and that:

  • you are unmarried; and

  • you have no dependants; and

  • you do not intend to stay in Jersey for more than two years as an au pair; and

  • you intend to leave Jersey on completion of your stay as an au pair.

Can I move to another host family ?

You may change families provided the new arrangements continue to meet the requirements of the Immigration Directions.

Can I extend my stay as an au pair ?

You can apply to extend your stay if:

  • you were given permission to enter Jersey as an au pair; and

  • you have an au pair placement; and

  • an extension would not take your stay beyond two years from the date you were first given permission to enter.

Permission to remain as an au pair will not be granted to anyone who did not enter Jersey as an au pair.

How do I apply for an extension ?

You should apply in person to the Customs & Immigration Service at the address shown on this leaflet.

Your application should be made before the date your permission to stay expires. Your application should be accompanied by:

  • your passport

  • a letter from you host family giving details of the au pair placement and the length of time for which an extension is sought.
