This information explains what the Immigration Directions say about husbands, wives, fiancés or fiancées coming to Jersey with, or to join, someone who is settled here. It will also explain what you have to do if you wish to visit Jersey to get married. It is only a guide, but aims to answer frequently asked questions.

When you contact us please provide the following:
your name (as in your passport);
your date of birth;
your nationality;
your Home Office reference number (if you have one)
the full name of your spouse or fiancé(e);
his or her date of birth and nationality;
his or her father’s name
Can my husband, wife, fiancé(e) come to Jersey ?
Your husband, wife or fiancé(e) may apply to come with you or join you in Jersey as long as:
How does my husband or wife qualify to come to Jersey ?
He or she must show that:
you are legally married to each other;
you are going to live together permanently as man and wife;
you have met each other;
you can support yourselves and any dependants without help from public funds;
you have adequate accommodation where you and your dependants can live without help from public funds; and
he or she is not under 16.
A wife who is polygamously married must be the first wife seeking to join her husband here.
Your husband or wife must get an entry clearance before they travel to Jersey.
When your husband or wife arrives in Jersey, they will have permission to stay and work for two years. Near the end of the two years, if you are still married and plan to live together, your husband or wife may apply to remain here permanently.
In some cases, a settlement entry clearance will be granted. This gives your husband or wife permission to settle in Jersey permanently as soon as he or she arrives. To get a settlement entry clearance, you must:
have been married four years ago;
have spent that four years living together outside Jersey; and
now be returning to Jersey to settle here together.
How does my fiancé(e) qualify ?
Your fiancé(e) must show that:
you plan to marry within a reasonable time (usually six months);
you plan to live together permanently after you are married;
you have met each other;
there is somewhere for him or her and any dependants to live until you are married without help from public funds; and
he or she and any dependants can be supported without working or having to get help from public funds.
Your fiancé(e) will be given permission to stay here for six months, but they must not work. When you are married, your husband or wife may apply to stay here. If we approve the application, we will give your husband or wife permission to stay and work for 2 years. Near the end of the two years, your husband or wife may apply to stay here permanently.
Your fiancé(e) must obtain entry clearance before travelling to Jersey.
