Settlement Test

Immigration Categories - Citizenship Test for persons applying for indefinite leave to remain (settlement)

From 1 January 2008 all applicants for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) will need to provide evidence that they have passed the Citizenship Test or attended an English language course with a citizenship module. The test and English language course are administered by Highlands College.

The aim is to encourage people to learn about the place they have chosen to make their home and to reach a reasonable standard of English. The test or course will only need to be passed once so a person who passes for indefinite leave purposes will not have to take the test or English language course again should they later apply to naturalise as a British citizen.

European Economic Area nationals do not need to obtain indefinite leave to remain but will have to take the test should they wish to become a British citizen.

The Citizenship Test is based on the handbook “Life in the United Kingdom” and on a “Jersey Supplement” both of which can be obtained from the Passport Office of the Customs & Immigration Service.

For further information please contact the Customs & Immigration Service on Tel: 448000 or email: immigration@gov.je

Information about sitting the test may be obtained from Highlands College.
