Unskilled work permits
Unskilled Work Permits in the Hospitality Industry
Permits in this category will only be issued to the following persons:
Nationals of non European Economic Area (EEA) countries who
- have previously been granted permits under this scheme, have not been abroad for longer than 6 months, and
- are returning to the same employer, and
- have received training at a hospitality training establishment (on a minimum 3 month full time course) before first coming to Jersey.
These nationals will be allowed to transfer to another employer when their main contract of employment ends. In these circumstances, the first employer remains the principal employer (that is, the one who has originally invested in that employee) The maximum duration of a permit will be nine months, including any extension. The employee will be required to return abroad on the expiry of the permit.
All workers who end their contracts of employment and return abroad after 30.06.07 will require at least a 3 month absence before they will be allowed to return.
Supplementary Employment in the Hospitality Industry
Supplementary employment, that is, additional work on a part time basis with a different employer is permitted. Holders of work permits of up to nine months validity in the Hospitality industry may, with the written consent of their primary employer, take similar work in that industry.
Requests to stay for a holiday at the end of the contract of employment
Provided this does not take the permit holder’s stay beyond the nine months allowed for seasonal employment, a short holiday may be approved if the applicant:
- Can maintain and accommodate themselves during the visit.
- Can produce a return ticket confirming the departure date.
The period of the visit should not exceed two weeks. Once a holiday extension has been approved as a visitor they cannot switch back into work permit employment.

In addition to a work permit, a non European Economic Area national seeking entry for more than 6 months also needs to obtain an entry clearance from a British Embassy or High Commission abroad, before arrival.
