I need to have a machine readable passport to travel to the USA without a visa. How can I tell if my passport is machine readable?

If you look at the page on your passport that contains your photograph and data there should be two line of numbers, letters and chevrons(<<). These are the machine readable characters.

If you hold a burgundy passport issued anywhere in the Channel Islands or the UK it will be machine readable.
