Pay attention to your cooking whilst watching television
Following an alarming increase in the number of fires caused by cooking during the last big sporting event on television, The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to take care whilst they are cooking and offer the following advice:
- Don’t leave pans unattended. Take them off the heat if you have to leave the room. Fire starts when your attention stops.
- Keep electrical leads, tea towels and cloths away from the cooker.
- Keep the oven, hob and grill clean. A build up of fat and grease can easily catch fire. If you have to use a chip pan never fill it over a third full of oil or fat.
- Never throw water on a chip pan. This will cause it to explode into a fireball causing severe burns to anyone nearby.
- Have an escape route planned so everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.
- Install a working smoke alarm in your home and test it regularly.
- Never attempt to cook whilst under the influence of alcohol
- If there’s a fire Get Out, Stay Out and call 999
Chip Pans
Around 8,200 chip/fat pan fires result in 34 deaths and nearly 3,000 injuries in the UK each year so it is vital to reduce fire hazards and cook safely.
“Chip pans cause a high number of fires resulting in deaths and injuries. People leave pans full of fat bubbling away, which can be lethal as the overheated oil will ignite. All you need is an interruption like a telephone call or even worse to fall asleep while the chips are cooking.
”Simply changing the way you cook can prevent fire. Invest in a deep fat fryer or opt for oven chips as an alternative.”

Dealing with a Fire in your Kitchen

07th September 2007 - 20th October 2007
With the up and coming Rugby World Cup taking place in France please be careful with your home appliances, especially Chip Pans. If you do feel hungry after watching a game and you have been drinking, then why not try a takeaway or better still prepare something before hand.
Please avoid using your Chip Pans.
