Top ten safety tips:

How to make your house a safe home:
  • Fit a smoke alarm and check it regularly
  • Make a fire action plan so that everyone in your house knows how to escape in the event of fire
  • Take care when cooking with hot oil and think about using thermostatically controlled deep fat fryers
  • Never leave lit candles unattended
  • Ensure cigarettes are stubbed out and disposed of carefully
  • Never smoke in bed
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children
  • Keep clothing away from heating appliances
  • Take care in the kitchen! Accidents while cooking account for 59% of fires in the home
  • Take special care when you are tired or when you've been drinking. Half of all deaths in domestic fires happen between 10pm and 8am.



Rescue people from fire

The main objective of the States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service is to Promote, Prevent and Preserve life. From time to time it becomes necessary for the service to rescue persons from fire.


Road Traffic Collisions

The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service work along side our Ambulance Service in the rescue of person(s) involved in RTC's whether they might be trapped within a vehicle or just injured from an RTC.


Height Rescue

Height Rescue is something the Service has undertaken for a number of years. The areas covered can range from a person(s) falling down a cliff face, becoming stranded on a cliff face, becoming injured on a cliff path, to a casuality up a tower crane or any rescue involving height. The service also specialises in below ground incidents.


Lift Rescues

Many building have lifts within them. The service undertakes rescues which involve person(s) who become stuck within the lift car or in fact within the lift machinary.


Assist Ambulance Service

From time to time the service is asked by the Ambulance Service to assist with a casuality, whether the casuality is at home or out in the open air.


Confined Space Rescue

The service attends any incidents involving confined space. This is using tecniques from the Height Rescue unit.


Aircraft Incidents

The service provides backup for the Airport Rescue and Fire Service during incidents at the airport and also attends all aircraft incidents off the airfield.


Furze Fires

Seasonal furze fires are a common occurrence around the Island. The service covers the full length and breath of the Island.


Hazardous Materials Incidents

The service attends these incidents using their Chemical suits.


Flooding Incidents

Whether in the home or at the work place, the service attends flooding calls providing pumps and salvage equipment.


Effect Entries

In the event of people being locked out of their home, the service might be able to help in gaining entry to the premise.


Chemical Incidents

Much the same as Hazardous Materials Incidents, the service attends any such incident.


First Aid Trained

As a member of the service we are passed out by the Ambulance service (First Aid at Work Level) on a 2 yearly basis.


Protecting the Environment

Part of the services commitment to the community is to protect the environment at any incident it attends.


Fire Blanket Testing

During the course of the year the service in conjunction with a local store test Fire Blankets free of charge and advice them on their condition.


Animal Rescue

The service undertakes animal rescues, whether its a pet or commercial (farm) animal.


Testing Water Supplies

During the year the service tests all of its water hydrants around the island, making sure all is well and functioning correctly.


Test Road Access

Vehicle access is very important to the service as we use various vehicle of varying sizes. If anyone has any concerns and they contact the service, we make sure we test the area concerned.
