Keeping in Touch
Mail
All prisoners are allowed to send out one free letter every week, the cost of the paper, envelope and postage being met by the Prison.
Prisoners on remand are permitted to send out an unlimited number of letters each week (although only one letter will be ‘free’), and to receive an unlimited number of letters. Any other prisoner is permitted to send out and receive one letter each week. This is the statutory minimum, and convicted prisoners may be able to send and receive more than one letter a week, subject to their having sufficient funds, and subject to their status in relation to incentives and earned privileges (IEP).
Stationery and stamps can be purchased by prisoners from the ‘canteen’, which is the prison shop.
Telephones
The prison operates a credit phone system. Prisoners wishing to make calls need to provide the numbers of family and friends that they want to call, and to have sufficient funds in their ‘personal cash account’ held at the prison.
Phones are available for prisoners’ use during their association times.
